Detailed investigation of TiN effect on hybrid intermetallic composites manufactured by combined sinter + forging method

Hybrid intermetallic composites (HICs-aluminum based matrix, new hybrid design) reinforced with titanium nitride (TiN) and alumina (γ-Al2O3) were designed manufactured through the innovative combined method of sinter + forging. This results in highly dense materials with, general, improved mechanical properties. In TiN content was varied (10, 20 30 wt %) but γ-Al2O3 kept constant at 10 wt%. Additionally, 5 wt% each Cu Ni mixed to improve processing composites. The properties specified by different destructive test methods (wear performance, micro hardness, quasi-static compression, three-point bending tests). Wear performance investigated scratch experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used determine microstructure, interface characteristics fracture surfaces. SEM analysis yielded that powders located grain boundaries this can be attributed improvement observed wear addition TiN.
